<p>Humangenetiken som vetenskap har ofta närts av förhoppningar om att kunna förklara mänskliga egenskaper och bota ärftliga sjukdomar. I denna kurs introduceras humangenetikens etablering i Sverige ur ett medicinhistoriskt perspektiv med fokus på perioden från 1950-talet till 1980, presenterad i en internationell kontext. Särskilt fokus läggs på de normer och värderingar som åtföljde etableringen av medicinsk genetik och framväxten av genetisk vägledning. Genomgående behandlas de sociala och kulturella värderingar som knutits till genetisk medicin och des tillämpningar. </p>
