Overview
Human mobility comprises phenomena as diverse as nomad pastoralism, rural-urban migration, refugee flows, internal displacement, international migration, and human trafficking. Often a crucial link in the peace-development nexus, the relationship between human mobility, conflict and development is non-linear and non-deterministic. It is shaped by context-specific structures, cultures, institutions, and traditions. More recently, regionally different effects of environmental change add to the complexity of understanding human mobility. The module defines, measures, and illustrates different forms of human mobility. Reviewing major trends in theories on migration and mobility, the module demonstrates links to underlying debates in academia and in policymaking. Drawing on numerous case studies the module scrutinises the value of important analytical concepts, such as livelihoods, vulnerability, integration, and gender for broadening the understanding of mobility in the peace-development nexus.
