In-depth Course in English, Linguistic Specialization

<p>The course consists of two modules: Module 1: English Linguistics – Theory and Method (7.5 Higher Education Credits) This module analyzes the English language in terms of its structure and function from the perspective of various linguistic subdisciplines, such as semantics, syntax, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, among others. In connection with the study of these linguistic approaches, the course considers current methods in language research, such as data collection methods (observation, elicitation, corpus building, etc.). As this module contributes to the completion of an independent research project by the student, it includes critical discussions of the practices and conditions of scientific authorship (the writing process, source documentation, peer review, source criticism, research ethics) and provides an opportunity for structured reflection on students’ own scientific style and approach. Module 2: English Linguistics (7,5 Higher Education Credits) The main point of departure for this module is that language is both a cognitive phenomenon and a social/cultural action. Based on modern functional/cognitive paradigms, the course provides an in-depth description of core linguistic phenomena (primarily syntactic and semantic/pragmatic) in relation to English along with the analytical concepts used for studying these.</p>
