Instrumental Analytical Methods

Analytical chemistry has developed into a sophisticated applied field of chemistry that relies on modern instrumentation and data processing. Various techniques and methods have developed significantly in recent years and are used to a significant extent in both qualitative and quantitative analyses. Knowledge of these techniques and methods is of great importance in, among other things, assessment of environmental impact, in forensic investigations and in the pharmaceutical industry. The course covers theory and applications of various instrumental methods, e.g. XRF, NMR, IR, SEM. In addition, great emphasis is placed on mass spectrometric analysers and coupled mass spectrometric techniques such as GC-MS, GC-MS/MS, LC-MS, LC-MS/MS and ICP-MS. In addition to mass spectrometric detection, mass spectrometric data is interpreted. The course includes laboratory exercises where various spectroscopic methods and mass spectrometric techniques are applied or demonstrated. The course also includes speciation analysis and quality assurance.
