<p>Discover how Italian shifts across regions, contexts, and communities. This course gives you tools to analyse real linguistic variation, understand its cultural roots, and appreciate the richness and diversity that shape modern Italian.</p><p>This course is taught at the master's level. In order to attend, you need to have successfully completed 90 higher education credits in Italian or have equivalent knowledge. </p><p>In this course, you will explore how historical events and social change shape linguistic variation in Italian. You will learn about key sociolinguistic features of contemporary Italian, major dialect regions, and how standard varieties develop. You will practise recognising and classifying dialects and sociolects and compare modern and historical forms of Italian. </p><p>You will also discuss standard language and social and geographical variation. The course introduces concepts such as multilingualism, code switching, language contact, and language politics.</p><p> </p>
