Linguistics: Phonology - Theory and Method

<p>How are the sound patterns of language structured? In this course, you will explore how speech sounds are organised, how they change over time, and how linguists collect and analyse data to better understand them.</p><h3>Explore Sound Patterns in Language</h3><p>This course gives you an in-depth understanding of phonology, the study of how sound patterns are structured and function in language. You will learn about phonological units, features and domains, as well as the processes that connect underlying language structures with the forms that are actually spoken.</p><p>You will work with different theories of phonology and compare how they explain linguistic phenomena. The course covers rule-based and constraint-based approaches, synchronic and diachronic perspectives, and articulatory phonology.<br/></p><p>An important part of the course is analysing phonological patterns and sound change across languages. You will also develop your ability to identify the conditions under which such changes occur and to justify the choice of a theoretical framework for phonological analysis.<br/></p>
