Master Programme in Geology

<p>Explore the vast time scales of fossils, the impact of ice ages on nature, and the dynamics of volcanoes and plate tectonics. This programme provides you with specialised expertise that is in demand on both the national and international job market.</p><p>During your studies, you gain in-depth knowledge across many areas of geology. You learn about the formation and structure of Earth, climate variations, prehistoric life, and evolution. You will develop an understanding of how knowledge of Earth's dynamics can contribute to addressing today’s societal challenges. You will also learn modern geological methods. These include geochronology, geochemistry, isotopes, sedimentology, dating techniques, palaeontology, landforms, and the formation and distribution of soil.</p><p>As a student you take part in lectures and exercises in well-equipped classrooms and teaching laboratories. The department has a wide range of advanced research equipment, including geochemical analysis instruments, state-of-the-art microscopes for the analysis of rock types and microfossils, and various dating laboratories, for example for determining the age of minerals and organic materials.</p><p>Fieldwork is an essential part of the programme. You will participate in field courses and excursions in Sweden and abroad to study different types of bedrock, sediments, landscapes, and environmental history. The programme is flexible, allowing for specialisation and exchange studies. It has strong research connections, and all lecturers are active researchers. The department hosts several world-leading research groups.</p>
