**What is the Master’s Program in Political Science?** The Master’s Program in Political Science, MaPS, is a two-year, full-time program worth 120 ECTS credits and taught in English. It prepares students for qualified careers in public institutions, politics, international organizations, research institutions, and other sectors where advanced analytical skills are essential. The program also provides eligibility for doctoral studies in political science. MaPS is research-oriented and method-driven. Students learn to analyze political institutions, governance processes, and societal change using systematic and evidence-based approaches. Emphasis is placed on rigorous inquiry, careful research design, and critical evaluation — competencies that are essential in policy analysis, investigation, and research-intensive roles. MaPS is offered on campus in Gothenburg. Students from diverse academic and national backgrounds contribute to an internationally oriented study environment characterized by discussion and analytical focus. Upon completion, graduates are awarded a Master of Science in Political Science from the University of Gothenburg. **What do we study?** The first semester establishes a strong analytical and methodological foundation. Students deepen their understanding of political science and complete courses in quantitative methods and research design, ensuring solid training from the outset. During the first year, students also take advanced courses in political science subfields, as well as elective master’s seminar courses. These courses are connected to ongoing research at the Department of Political Science and provide in-depth engagement with central areas of political science, while allowing students to shape their academic direction. The third semester offers flexibility. Students may take a methodological specialization course, undertake an internship for a full or half semester, study abroad, or select elective courses. This structure makes it possible to further develop methodological competence or broaden academic and professional experience. The fourth semester is dedicated entirely to the degree project. Under supervision, students conduct an independent study that demonstrates their ability to apply theory and method to a clearly defined research question.
