Overview
Philosophical aesthetics encompasses issues such as the nature of aesthetic value, relations between art and the mind, the foundations of art criticism, the role of art in society, and the appreciation of nature. The international Master's Programme in Aesthetics at the Department of Philosophy in Uppsala provides you with tools for thinking precisely and rigorously about issues and problems in a variety of domains: the arts, aesthetic experiences, and culture more broadly. Aesthetics is a discipline located at the heart of the humanities. By tackling philosophical questions about art and rigorously examining concepts such as aesthetic experience, culture, beauty, emotion, and creativity, it addresses elements of our common, shared humanity. This Master's programme will offer you valuable insights into such questions, through a combination of historical perspectives, contemporary debates, and forward-looking analysis. As a graduate of the programme, you will have a deep and diverse set of skills applicable across a variety of career paths. The training is also highly suitable if you want to continue your studies at the doctoral level, either in Sweden or elsewhere in the world. The language of instruction is English.

Entry requirements
_Academic requirements_ A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university with main field of study in the humanities or social sciences. The transcript should include at least 60 credits in one of the disciplines aesthetics, philosophy, history of art, literature, and musicology. These credits should include at least one course assessed by a written assignment of 2000 words or more in which you engage with theoretical, conceptual, or philosophical questions. _Language requirements_ Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6. This requirement can be met either by achieving the required score on an internationally recognised test, or by previous upper secondary or university studies in some countries.
