Master's Programme in Bioinformatics - Biology Background

The Master's Programme in Bioinformatics is designed for those of you who wish to focus on the exciting interdisciplinary field of bioinformatics, which combines computer sciences, mathematics and biology. The knowledge you will acquire from the programme is central to many research fields, including studying human genetic diseases, recreating relationships between species or developing new pharmaceuticals. The courses in the first semester of the programme depend on your background. If you have a biology background, you will take courses in programming, scientific computing and database design. If you have a background in computer science, you will take a course in molecular biology, genetics and evolution. The courses in the first semester of the programme depend on your background. You will, together with those from a computer science background, take courses in bioinformatics and statistics during the second semester. In the second year, you will have the opportunity to specialise in areas such as proteomics and metabolomics, population genomics, and phylogenetic analysis. The programme concludes with a degree project, which can be carried out at a company, government agency, public authority, or university. The University has an excellent international reputation, and a Master's degree in bioinformatics from Uppsala University will provide you with an internationally recognised qualification that opens doors to both academic research and a career in industry, in Sweden and internationally. Currently, most of our alumni are working in research-related environments in academy or in close collaboration with the universities. The language of instruction is English.
