Master's Programme in Holocaust and Genocide Studies

The Master's Programme in Holocaust and Genocide Studies provide you with the ability to understand and independently analyse genocide and other forms of mass violence in their historical and cultural contexts. These violent events have most often occurred in the context of widespread economic, social and political crises, mobilisation of ethnic identities, formation of new states, colonial processes and modernisation. During the first semester, you will acquire basic empirical and theoretical knowledge about the Holocaust and other cases of genocide and mass violence. This knowledge is then linked to theories on the mechanisms of violence during the second semester. During the second and third semesters, you have the opportunity to specialise in a field by taking other courses given by the Department of History or other departments and start working on your thesis. The fourth semester is devoted to thesis writing. The Master's Programme in Holocaust and Genocide Studies is strongly connected to international research and publication in the field, which provides you with a solid foundation for choosing either an academic career or working in various international and national institutions. These include UN organisations, branches of the European Union and the Council of Europe, international NGOs and various Swedish organisations (e.g. SIDA, IDEA, and the Forum for Living History). The language of instruction is English.
