Overview
Infectious diseases are one of the world's major challenges. Climate change and the spread of infections between humans and animals increase the risk of pandemics. At the same time, uncontrolled use of antibiotics gives a frightening development of resistance. Collaboration between different scientific and societal disciplines is required to maintain a sustainable situation for managing these diseases. In theory and practice, the Master's Programme in Infection Biology starts from the molecular processes controlling the causes of emergence, spread and development of microbes and microbial infections to describe how to predict, diagnose, trace, prevent and treat infectious diseases. The programme’s broad competence in infectious medicine is secured by collaboration with lecturers from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala University Hospital, the University Animal Hospital, the Swedish Food Agency, the National Veterinary Institute, as well as foreign experts in the subject. The programme’s strong connection to research prepares you for research/PhD studies but also gives you the competence to work with infectious medicine issues concerning, for example, diagnostics, drug development, antibiotic resistance, vaccination, crisis preparedness, food production, developing countries' problems and zoonoses. The language of instruction is English.
