Master's Programme, Mathematics

The Master’s programme in Mathematics is a joint programme between KTH and Stockholm University (SU), and leads to a joint Master’s degree. The specialisations of study are directed towards areas corresponding to research groups at KTH and SU, taking full advantage of the broad spectrum of expertise available at both universities. Programme outline The courses in the programme are organised in three blocks – the basic block, the profile block and the broadening block. The basic block provides an in-depth education in mathematics on an advanced level. Within this block it is mandatory to take one course in each of these areas: algebra and geometry, analysis, topology and finally, discrete mathematics. In the profile block, courses are chosen freely to specialise and prepare for the Master thesis – the subject is regarded in a broad sense, including mathematical statistics, optimisation theory and theoretical computer science. The broadening block contains courses on theory and methodology of science, communication of mathematical subjects and a half semester of freely elective courses. Degree project The degree project will typically be carried out within the specialisation chosen, either internally with a research group at KTH or externally at a company. The results are presented in a Master's thesis, as well as in a seminar. Career prospects The programme may lead to an advanced industrial position or serve as a platform for continued graduate studies. Mathematics is becoming increasingly important in society, and one key function of this programme is to educate tomorrow’s industrial mathematicians.
