Matematisk kunskap är ett centralt tema. På kursen behandlas nationella styrdokument och nationella och internationella ramverk som beskriver matematisk kunskap. Utifrån relevant forskning och beprövad erfarenhet behandlas hur barn och ungdomar lär sig och utvecklar matematisk kunskap inom taluppfattning och algebra. Beträffande de matematiska förmågorna ligger tyngdpunkten på procedurhantering, begreppsförståelse och resonemangsförmåga. Vidare belyses attityd och inställning till matematik och matematikundervisning. Under kursens gång ges ett historiskt perspektiv på valda delar av ämnesområdet.
