Döden hade en central roll i de antika samhällena och var en angelägenhet som berörde både den enskilde, familj, släkt och stat. Döden var omgärdad av ritualer, vars syfte både var att underlätta för den avlidne att passera gränsen mellan liv och död, dels fungera som ett sammanhållande kitt för den kvarvarande familjen och samhällsstrukturen.
