I fokus för den här kursen står studiet av västerländsk konstmusik från en begränsad tidsperiod. Valet av tidsperiod kan variera och vara exempelvis 1700-talets barockmusik eller 1800-talets romantiska musik. Oavsett tidsperiod studeras musiken både i sitt sociala och stilhistoriska sammanhang. Studier av källmaterial ingår och särskild vikt läggs vid tolkning av materialet utifrån källkritiska metoder. Generella frågor kring historieskrivning berörs också och exempel från dagens musikhistoriska forskning diskuteras.
