Overview

What happens when opposing ideologies collide - and an entire society ends up caught in between? In this course, you explore Central Europe’s turbulent 20th century and see how ideas, conflicts, and power struggles continue to shape the region.

In this course, you explore two ideologies that shaped Central Europe during the 20th century: nationalism and communism. You begin with a theoretical introduction to these concepts, giving you the tools to understand their influence on countries such as Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary.

You then study how nationalism and communism emerged, developed, and how their legacies can still be seen in the region today. You work with concrete examples, such as the creation of new nation-states after World War I and the introduction of communist systems after 1945. You also analyse how these changes affected political, economic, social, and cultural development.

The course concludes with a broader discussion about the long-term impact of nationalism and communism on contemporary Central Europe, and how these ideological legacies continue to shape identity and societal development in the region.
