Kursen ger en introduktion till numerisk analys. Kursen behandlar konsekvenserna av att datorer representerar reella tal som flyttal med ändlig precision. Studenterna lär sig att använda och förstå egenskaperna hos numeriska metoder för att lösa linjära och icke-linjära ekvationssystem, interpolera, beräkna integraler, samt lösa ordinära differentialekvationer för modellering av dynamiska förlopp. Centrala begrepp i kursen är avrundningsfel, diskretiseringsfel, trunkeringsfel, kondition, numeriskt stabila respektive instabila algoritmer, effektivitet, komplexitet, iteration och konvergenshastighet.
