<p>Västerländsk esoterism har under de senaste decenniet utvecklats till ett av de mest dynamiska och spännande forskningsfälten inom samtida religionshistorisk forskning. Begreppet spänner över områden som hermetisk filosofi, alkemi, frimureri, ceremoniel magi, ockultism, satanism och New Age och har även haft en stark påverkan på rörelser från både höger och vänsterkanten som den tyska ariosofin och den amerikanska afrocentrismen. Esoterism har även haft ett betydande inflytande på den bredare populärkulturen. Kursen syftar till att ge en historisk beskrivning av ämnet, dess sociala och populärkulturella påverkan samt redogöra för forskningens teoretiska perspektiv på området.</p>
