Kursen behandlar orsaker till, förekomst av, samt symtom vid vanliga sjukdomar och hälsoproblem hos äldre. Kursen behandlar också läkemedelsbehandling vid vanliga sjukdomar och hälsoproblem hos äldre, samt läkemedelsanvändning hos äldre i Sverige. Vidare diskuteras läkemedelsbehandling vid olika typer av demenssjukdomar med särskild tonvikt på Alzheimers sjukdom. Kursen tar också upp orsaker till, symtom vid, och riskfaktorer för Alzheimers sjukdom samt orsaker till och behandling vid beteendemässiga och psykiska symtom vid demenssjukdom (BPSD). Andra viktiga områden som berörs är farmakokinetiska och farmakodynamiska förändringar hos äldre, biverkningar hos äldre, fallolyckor, konfusion och olämpliga läkemedelsval till äldre. Problematik som uppkommer vid behandling med många läkemedel samtidigt (polyfarmaci) behandlas också, likaså metoder för att förbättra läkemedelsanvändningen hos äldre.
