Overview
This course explores the role of physical activity in promoting health and preventing illness with a focus on psychological aspects (e.g., mental, emotional, and social). The course examines the factors that promote physical activity (e.g., autonomy, relatedness) as well as the barriers (e.g., time scarcity, low self-efficacy), considering influences across the lifespan at both the individual and social level. Key topics influencing exercise uptake and sustainable adherence are examined (e.g., motivation and emotions). The course introduces evidence-based strategies for promoting physical activity and optimising health outcomes. Students will be provided opportunities to test both intrapersonal approaches (e.g., self-regulation, physical activity identity) and interpersonal techniques (e.g., communication, social support). These strategies will be considered in relation to a range of different contexts and populations including youth, physical activity on prescription, health promotion and disease management, as well as healthy aging and rehabilitation. Students will engage in reflective learning activities that connect theory and research to their own experiences and environments. Content is designed in a way that develops the ability to understand and explain psychological factors influencing physical activity, as well as apply this knowledge across diverse health and professional settings. This course is relevant for individuals working in fitness (e.g., personal trainers), medicine and rehabilitation (e.g., physiotherapy, nursing), mental health (e.g., psychotherapists, social workers), as well as anyone interested in developing their own healthy lifestyle.
