Physical Geography: the Climate System

<p>Here you learn about climatological processes and their effects on the global and local climate, as well as the importance of the climate in environmental and community planning. The importance of the physical properties of the atmosphere for global and regional energy flows and how these in turn affect the general circulation of the atmosphere are also important parts of the content.</p><p>The course aims to introduce the student to basic knowledge regarding global climate systems, climatological processes and their effect on global and local climate. The course contains components of both theoretical and practical character.</p> <h3>Course content</h3> <p>The course focus on understanding of regional and global climatology, causes of large-scale variations in energy budget and factors that generates and influence the global climate system. The importance of the physical characteristics of the atmosphere for global and regional energy fluxes, and how these in turn influence the general atmospheric circulation patterns are also important parts of the content. It includes general circulation patterns of the atmosphere and the oceans as well as the atmosphere-ocean interactions and their importance for the global energy fluxes. The course furthermore comprises studies of disturbances like extra-tropical and tropical weather systems and their effects and important current issues relating to climate change are also covered in the course. Finally, climatological methodology, data sources and analysis methods are dealt with in a series of practical exercises.</p> <p>Teaching is done in the form of lectures, seminars, field exercises, practical assignments conducted individually or in groups.
