Kursen behandlar postindustriella samhällsförändringar och hur dessa påverkar livsvillkor på olika platser. Tyngdpunkten läggs vid svenska förhållanden, med jämförande utblickar mot andra länder. Effekter av till exempel strukturomvandling och migration berörs, med exempel från både stad och lands- eller glesbygd. Plats och livsvillkor behandlas i relation till frågor om integration, exkludering och polarisering mellan grupper och geografiska områden. Kursen ger också inblick i samhällsarbete som arbetssätt för att motverka sociala problem och utveckla lokalsamhällen.
