<p>In a changing world, it is more important than ever to understand the values and rules on which the European Union is built. This course explains the roots and development of the EU with emphasis on its current institutional framework and the political considerations that underpin its legal order.</p><p>This course is offered exclusively to students in the Master of Science in European Affairs programme.</p><p>In this course, you will learn how the EU has developed from an international agreement into an autonomous legal order. It starts with describing the EU constitutional structure and institutions, with a special emphasis on the role of the European Court of Justice. You will explore key principles, such as the direct effect and the primacy of EU law, which are elaborated on in detail. </p><p>Throughout the course, there is a strong emphasis on the internal market and the four freedoms that are central to European integration. Coupled to this, you will learn about issues of current relevance in the EU, such as climate policy and the social dimension. BREXIT and the EU’s external competences in global interactions are examined. Finally, you will discuss emerging challenges, including fundamental rights protection and the common foreign and security policy from a legal point of view.</p><p> </p>
