Kursen behandlar de centrala perspektiven i den västerländska politiska teorin genom att fokusera på centrala politiska tänkare, såväl historiska som samtida. Den ger även en översiktlig genomgång av de politiska ideologiernas historia och introducerar grunddragen hos politiska ideologier såsom konservatism, liberalism, socialism, och feminism. Kursen ger verktyg att analysera klassiska politiska och sociala problemställningar, exempelvis makthavares rätt att styra andra, gränserna för individens frihet, och rättvis fördelning av samhällets ekonomiska resurser.
