Reading and Writing in a Second Language: Connections, Theory and Practice

<p>What do reading and writing have in common, and how do they interact in the learning process? In this course, you gain in-depth insight into how reading and writing skills develop in English, with a particular focus on the interaction between first and second language acquisition.</p><p>This course explores different theoretical models of communicative competence and how they can be applied to second language acquisition, with a focus on reading and writing in English. Both the cognitive and social dimensions of reading and writing processes are examined, as well as how these processes develop when English is learned as a second language.</p><p>Drawing on research in both first and second language acquisition, the course provides a deeper understanding of similarities and differences in how reading and writing skills develop across languages. It combines theoretical perspectives with didactic applications and addresses empirical studies of reading and writing processes in the foreign language classroom. The course is particularly aimed at practising and prospective upper-secondary school teachers of English but is also relevant to others with an interest in language education and applied linguistics.</p>
