Overview
Communicating your message in a persuasive, appealing way across cultures is becoming a vital skill both for citizenship in an increasingly polarized society and for professional advancement in a knowledge economy. Equally important is the ability to critically analyze the messaging of others across a complex media landscape. This course provides the practical tools and theoretical knowledge to become a more effective communicator and consumer of information. Participants will be introduced to key concepts in classical and modern rhetoric, which they will use to sharpen their skills in public speaking and debating, examine messaging in a variety of media, and discuss the relationship between rhetorical practices and political power in a modern, global society.
