Overview

Would you like to work at the intersection of physics and chemistry? Modern solar cells, electronic noses, hydrogen cars, energy storage, and battery development are just a few of the fields where chemistry and physics interact.

In this programme, you combine studies in physics and chemistry. You’ll dive into the vast length and time scales of physics—from the tiniest building blocks of matter and ultra-fast processes at the atomic level to the infinity of the universe. With the help of chemistry, you’ll also explore the world of molecules, understand how living organisms function, and learn how chemical knowledge can be used to protect the environment or create innovative materials. There is a wide range of interesting and important career opportunities in areas where chemistry and physics are intertwined.

During the programme

The programme begins with foundational courses in chemistry, physics, and mathematics. You’ll move between subjects such as organic chemistry, biochemistry, mechanics, optics, quantum physics, thermodynamics, linear algebra, single-variable calculus, and multivariable calculus.

After the core courses, you will choose a major field of study in consultation with a study advisor. This structure allows you the flexibility to switch to either the chemistry or physics program later on, depending on how you wish to shape your continued studies at the bachelor’s level. The program includes lectures, laboratory sessions, and problem-solving exercises. Throughout your studies, you’ll engage with researchers and learn about current research projects. The programme concludes with a project in the interdisciplinary field between physics and chemistry.

Some courses and much of the course literature are in English. You will also develop your ability to use English as a working language. Additionally, you have the opportunity to study part of your programme abroad, allowing you to create a unique educational profile tailored to your interests while also increasing your competitiveness in the job market. Lund University has exchange agreements with universities worldwide.

To support your success in the programme, we offer Supplemental Instruction (SI) for at least one course. During SI sessions, you’ll meet with a student who has previously completed the course, and together you’ll review and discuss selected parts of the course content and objectives.

After the programme

Upon completing the programme, you’ll be eligible to apply for master’s level studies. Learn more about the science master’s programmes at the Science faculty web site: https://www.science.lu.se/education/programmes-and-courses/masters-programmes.

There is a high demand for professionals with expertise in both physics and chemistry, and this demand is expected to continue growing. Many of today’s cutting-edge research fields in physics—such as nanoscience, combustion physics, and medical physics—require knowledge of chemistry. Similarly, several areas of chemistry research—such as physical chemistry, theoretical chemistry, and chemical physics—require a solid understanding of physics. The strong foundation in natural sciences provided by this programme is highly valued in the job market.

Important information for prospective students

The bachelor’s programmes in physics will be restructured starting in the autumn semester of 2026. You are encouraged to transfer to the new chemistry/physics programme once it is established, which can be done without any interruption to your studies. Alternatively, you may complete the current programme by substituting mandatory courses with equivalent ones from the new curriculum. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the study advisor at: studievagledning@fysik.lu.se

https://www.fysik.lu.se/en/education/international-bachelors-degree-programme
