Kursen behandlar hållbar utveckling, i betydelsen ekologisk, ekonomisk och social hållbarhet, med betoning på social hållbarhet, och hur man kan förstå hållbarhetsfrågor på en internationell, nationell och regional nivå. Samhällsbety- delsen av den sociala hållbarhetens underområden; rättvisa, jämlikhet, jämställdhet, deltagande och social sammanhållning behandlas likväl som processer som hindrar och förvårar uppnåendet av dem och hur detta påverkar olika grupper i samhället.
