Overview
This course provides students with the necessary and fundamental knowledge of mechanical and structural vibrations and dynamic modeling. The course provides the students with vital engineering understanding of different vibration sources, applications, challenges and solutions. The first part of the course starts by introducing students to basic dynamic modeling, including single-degree-of-freedom system (SDOF). In more detail, equation of motion formulation, the natural frequency and resonance phenomenon and solving the dynamic response for both linear and torsional systems are covered. Then free and forced vibration concepts are introduced as well as the concept of damping and damping types. This is further extended to two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) systems and the multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) systems. The second part of the course presents different practical techniques, including vibration reduction, absorption, modal analysis and measurement techniques. Finally, an introduction to vibration-based condition monitoring is presented for a few failure cases. The following topics are covered: · Introduction to mechanical vibrations · Single-degree-of-freedom systems · Torsional vibration systems · Damped vibrations (Viscous damping) · Forced vibrations · Two-degree-of-freedom systems · Multi-degree-of-freedom systems · Vibration isolation and absorption · An introduction to vibration measurements, modal analysis and vibration-based condition monitoring
