Overview
The course will focus on green and sustainable aspects of organic chemistry covering both bulk and fine chemicals. A historic perspective will be given on how the raw material used has dictated the development of methodology in organic synthesis and how this will affect organic chemistry in the future. The efficiency of a synthetic routes with respect to waste, derivatization steps, solvents, energy consumption and mass balance will be assessed. Catalysis to prevent derivatization steps and to increase efficiency of organic synthesis will be central. Benign by design strategies will be discussed such as circularity and also toxicity of reagents, intermediates and products and also safety issues performing organic synthesis.
