Overview
The course deals with the evolution of language and discusses physiological, cognitive and cultural aspects of the origin and development of language. The field of research related to human and language evolution is constantly changing and new discoveries are being made at a rapid pace. The course addresses current issues related to both human biological and cultural development in order to shed light on what language is, how it differs from the communication of other animals, how long we have had language, and why we have language at all. The course has its starting point in a functionalist-cognitive view of language that considers variation and linguistic diversity as important components of an explanatory model for language and language use.
