Kursen belyser medicinens framväxt som ett kunskapsfält och dess alltmer centrala roll i det västerländska samhället. Genom en rad nedslag i både svensk och internationell historia behandlas teman som medikalisering, institutionalisering och kritik mot den medicinska maktutövningen under tidsperioden ca 1750 fram till idag. Kursen tar avstamp i den kritiska medicinhistoriska kunskapstraditionen och anlägger historiska perspektiv på medicinens samspel med kultur och politik.
