The wood material

This course provides a comprehensive overview of Northern European forestry, focusing on both coniferous and deciduous trees found in the region. Students will explore how different silvicultural methods affect wood quality, deepen their knowledge of wood degradation and protection methods, and understand contemporary scientific developments in wood modification. The course covers the properties of wood and how these are influenced by wood handling, as well as evaluating the timber processing from tree to final consumer product. Students will also gain the ability to independently analyze and write critically about issues related to wood materials. The course includes topics such as the principles of Northern European forestry, identification of common tree species, wood structure and its anatomical, chemical, physical, and technical properties, quality standards for roundwood and sawn timber, wood durability and methods for improving it, and best practices for handling and storing both roundwood and sawn timber. The course concludes with a focus on the principles of wood processing and report writing.
