Kursen fokuserar på de tekniska grunderna i trumspel och innehåller en grundlig genomgång av den spelteknik som används i dagens traditionstrumslagning. Kursen berör hur speltekniken har förändrats genom historien samt hur tekniken ser ut i andra trumslagartraditioner från till exempel Frankrike, Schweiz, USA och Skottland. Vidare studeras militärmusikens utveckling i Sverige från 1500-talet till nutid med fokus på trumslagning samt musikens och trumslagningens roll.
