<p>In this course, you explore how violence is represented and experienced in visual arts and media. Through examples ranging from painting and photography to film, television and computer games, you examine the historical, aesthetic, philosophical and political dimensions of images of violence.</p><p>In this course, you explore how violence is represented and experienced across visual arts and media, from painting, sculpture and photography to film, television, computer games and medical imagery. The course examines how representations of violence have developed in different historical and social contexts, and how they shape our understanding and experience of violence.</p><p>The course approaches representations of violence from historical, societal, psychological, philosophical and aesthetic perspectives. Key topics include the relationship between violence, visuality and power, as well as how representations of violence relate to gender, religion, ethnicity and other social and political relations. The course also considers questions of offensive and disturbing images, and how different media shape the ways violence is represented and perceived.</p><p>Through seminar and film screenings, you will learn to analyse and critically discuss representations of violence in a range of visual forms and contexts and using different theoretical and methodological approaches,<br/><br/></p>

To be admitted to the course, students must have 90 first-cycle credits including a Bachelor’s degree project of 15 credits in Art History and Visual Studies, Architecture, Film Studies, Design Studies, or the equivalent.
