Overview
Periodic oscillations: amplitude, period time, wavelength, frequency, phase, position, velocity, acceleration, forced oscillations, resonance, damping. Plane, circular, and spherical waves: longitudinal and transverse waves, mechanical waves and electromagnetic waves. Wave construction: the wave equation, the superposition principle, Hyugen's principle, Fourier analysis. Basic wave properties: wave energy, phase and group velocities, wave packets, refraction, diffraction, standing waves, interference, beat tones, dispersion. Sound: the human hearing, musical instruments, the Doppler effect, acoustic impledance. Light: mirrors, lens systems, polarization, index of refraction, double refraction, the human eye, optical aids and instruments, resolution, the ray model, the wave model, the photon model. Instruction is in the form of lectures, exercises, and mandatory laboratory sessions.
