Biology: Microbiology

<p>BIOR18</p><p>Microbes are the unseen majority on earth. They are found essentially everywhere where there is liquid water and their activities strongly affect all other forms of life. Whatever part of biology you are specialising in, knowledge about microorganisms is valuable. Their importance in e.g. medicine, food industry, biotechnology, and as model organisms in molecular biology is well known, but microbiology has also been strongly developed and renewed. New methods and knowledge make it possible to explore the enormous and to a large extent unexplored resource that the microorganisms constitute and the large impact they have on all biology. This course gives a broad orientation in modern microbiology, designed both for those who will specialise in this subject and for those who will go in other directions. In the course we deal with microbial diversity, function, and physiology, discuss the significance of molecular biology methods in the study of the microbes, and give an introduction to ecological, medical, and industrial microbiology. The course also gives profound training in practical microbiological work.</p>
