Overview
The course English for Teachers in Grades 4–6, 30 ECTS credits (Lärarlyftet) aims for participants, from a subject-pedagogical and subject-theoretical perspective, to develop subject knowledge and professional skills for teaching English in compulsory school, grades 4–6. The course consists of three modules and runs over two semesters (50% study pace). The course includes recorded lectures by teachers from University West, as well as discussion forums and seminars with presentations and discussions that provide opportunities for collegial learning. The lectures are based on the course learning outcomes and are connected to the course literature and current curriculum documents. Participants engage with and process the content through a variety of oral and written assessment tasks. The course has a clear focus on language teaching and learning for children/pupils in grades 4–6. A second focus is the teacher’s own professional competence. The course begins with an introduction to theories and research on how children and young people learn languages. Course 1 also addresses how the English subject creates opportunities for a multilingual perspective. This introduction forms the foundation for the course’s continued work with different focuses, texts, and materials for classroom use, as well as with the teacher’s selection and organisation of learning activities. In order to create a stimulating and safe learning environment, the teacher needs to feel confident as a language user and language model. Therefore, the development of the teacher’s own linguistic competence and language proficiency is emphasised throughout the course. In addition to knowledge of the English subject, the course also provides an understanding of how the overarching goals and guidelines of the curriculum can shape teaching through conscious choices of inclusive texts, materials, and the teacher’s professional approach.
